The Times reported this weekend on the Downtown Alliance’s New Approach for Water Street; a rethink of the corridor from Whitehall to Fulton as a pedestrian friendly, mixed-use zone. They highlighted four points:
• Rescale the Street to Create an Iconic Boulevard [More]
• Strengthen Connections to the Historic Core & Waterfront [More]
• Realign Public and Ground Floor Spaces to Enhance Street Life [More]
• Extend Hours of Activity Along Water Street [More]

NYPD has the Seaport taped off as the last concert goers clear out. You may be stopped if you are heading in this direction on foot and turned away if you don’t live/work in the area. Also, Fulton Street’s still crowded and boisterous from Gold west to Broadway.

Drake was scheduled to play a free show at South Street Seaport in downtown NYC today from 6-9. Apparently that didn’t happen. More to come hopefully.
UPDATE: Some small blogs have this story, some with pictures.
Related: Outbreak is on AMC (via @katiebakes). Also, Hanson was the opener.
PUMA City is now fully operational at South Street Seaport, staying for the duration of the World Cup. I happened to pass by today as Human Foosball was starting up in the mini field enclosure. This is one of several game sessions open to public participation each day. [Event Schedule]
As I made my way along Wall Street to catch the water taxi this afternoon I noticed a swarm of tourists, NYPD and local news affiliates all focused on a taped off “crime scene” outside the front entrance of Cipriani. I was in a hurry, figured a crime scene for a crime scene, and quickly moved along, but thanks to Google I found my answer, and it’s even better than I imagined.
More than 15,000 bees found their new home on the front door of Cipriani.
Apparently, the NYPD’s “bee man” said the bees were “following the lead of their queen, who was likely fleeing an overcrowded hive nearby to look for a new home.”
First, who knew the NYPD had a bee guy? I wonder if beekeeping is just a hobby, or if he’s the one guy on the force who went through bee removal training just in case. I’d like to think it was his passion and that today he got the call of his career.
Second, leave it to New Yorkers to dramatically recall the experience. One Brooklyn resident compared the scene to “one of those films where the animals turn against mankind.” Ha!

NEW YORK - After hours of contentious public comment, a New York City community board voted late Tuesday to support a plan to build a mosque and cultural center near ground zero.
“It’s a seed of peace,” board member Rob Townley said. “We believe that this is a significant step in the Muslim community to counteract the hate and fanaticism in the minority of the community.”
